April 2009

Dear Parents

I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter and that the Year 4’s recovered from their adventures at Caythorpe Manor.  I also hope that your child is ready for their last term for this academic year.  The children in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be involved in several transition activities as they prepare for life in Middle School.

During this term we will be studying the following topics:

Literacy Children will experience and analyse a wide range of different genres: poetry –creating images using words and exploring form. In fiction- exploring adventure and mystery stories and investigating reports and recounts in non fiction texts such as newspapers and magazines.  We will focus on improving the quality of independent writing and an increased understanding of reading text through comprehension and guided reading sessions. Sounds-Write sessions will reinforce children’s segmenting and blending skills to read and spell an increasing range of vocabulary.
Numeracy Children will be reinforcing and extending their numerical knowledge and understanding through activities that involve problem solving in order to use and apply their skills in counting, partitioning and calculating, handling data and measures, securing number facts, calculations and relationships and patterns in numbers. Please support your child at home in learning and recalling the multiplication and corresponding division facts!
Science Habitats. Children are introduces to life processes including nutrition, movement and growth and reproduction common to plants and animals. They will find out how plants and animals in different habitats are suited to their environment. 
ICT Databases. Children learn to collect and store information involving more than two variables. They will use databases to carry out searches and produce graphs and charts. Manipulating Sound. Children will use music software to compose, collect and communicate their musical ideas.
DT Investigating simple pneumatic systems and designing and making a model of a monster that moves!.
Art Children will explore and use space, colour, form and pattern to design and build a ‘Marquette’ or model of a sculpture for a school site or local area.
Geography
(first half term)
Improving our environment. Children will use the school grounds and immediate locality to investigate environmental issues and improvements.

History
(second half term)

Local history. Children are introduced to an enquiry based approach to a local study. They will have access to historical sources and experience fieldwork and research skills.
PE Tuesday and Friday.  We will be doing athletics and cricket.  For the second half term we will be swimming again on a Friday afternoon.   Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school every Monday and remains there all week.  Trainers or plimsolls will be needed this term (jogging bottoms and a warm top required if weather is a bit cool).  Please remove any earrings on these days.
RE

Choices. Children will discuss and have the opportunity to reflect on the choices they make in life with their friends and through their actions and how theses choices influence their behaviours and choice of lifestyle. To explore the choices other people have made.

Music Learning songs in preparation for our summer Singing Spectacular.  Music composition.
PHSCE

Mrs Oldham-Our Qualified Medical Officer will be leading a Young First Aider course covering the basic knowledge and understanding of first aid equipment and procedures. It will build self-awareness, self-esteem, interpersonal skills and confidence in coping with difficult real life situations. 
Relationships and Changes.  We will be looking at relationships between family and friends and then consider the impact of changes in children’s lives especially the transition to new schools.

Class 3 homework:  Please support your child with regular reading, weekly spellings, and their learning tasks.  These will be given out on a Friday and will be expected back in school by Thursday of the following week. 

Please help your child remember to undertake the homework and return it on time as well as ensuring they bring their reading books into school in order that they can read daily.

Your child’s PE kit should consist of: trainers/plimsolls, white t-shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms and a warm top until the weather improves.
