Class 2 Newsletter
September 2008
Dear Parents
Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed
the summer holiday and are looking forward to a new school year. This
year is different for all of class 2. The new children will find the day
much more structured with less opportunity for free play, while the year
2s will be presented with greater challenges in preparation for the
national SATs assessments in May.
At Key Stage 1 the aim is to cover
the required subjects with a cross curricular approach where possible,
although some subjects will stand alone, our theme for the term is Toys.
| Literacy |
Whole class Big Book
sessions. Sounds-Write groups. The focus to begin will be
independence of reading and writing. |
| Numeracy |
Counting, writing numbers,
ordering, place value, addition, subtraction, shape, time money,
measures. |
| Science |
Forces and motion; Starting
with moving toys – looking at how things move. Please can you
send in a moving toy eg spinning top, jack-in a box, pull along
toys, etc. for next week. |
| DT |
Making moving pictures, wind
up toys and puppets. |
| Geography |
(first half term) The
adventures of Barnaby Bear in Brittany. We will be having a
French day on Friday 24th October. |
| History |
(second half term) Toys from
the past. I hope to organise a visit to Bedford Museum and would
be grateful for the loan of any parents’ or grand parents’
childhood toys. |
| RE |
Special Books. Focusing on
our favourite books (please bring) and comparing sacred texts
from Christianity, Judaism and Islam. |
| ICT |
Unit 1f Understanding
Instructions and Unit 2d controlling a floor turtle. |
| Art |
Exploring colour and painting
techniques. Studying composition and using view finders. |
| PE |
Mondays and Fridays. Outside
games first half term (weather permitting). Please ensure your
child’s PE kit is in school every Monday to remain all week.
Trainers or plimsolls will be needed this term. Please remove
any earrings on these days. |
| PHSCE |
New beginnings - taught
through circle time, games and stories. |
| Music |
Songs and simple rhythms,
beginning the Occarina Carousel unit Toys. |
| French |
Beginning conversations – simple vocabulary. |
Class 2 Homework: regular
reading, weekly spellings, weekly Learning Log topic related to the
week’s learning – in either science, geography, literacy, numeracy etc.
As always please don’t hesitate to raise any issues
or concerns as soon as possible. I will be on the playground every
morning from 8.50am, or can arrange a meeting after school.
